OnlyFans, a controversial platform

OnlyFans is an online platform that allows users to create and sell content, often of a photographic or video nature, in exchange for a monthly subscription. Although it is mainly known for adult content, many creators use it to share content of various kinds. In the case of Laugher and Williams, the two athletes decided to take advantage of the platform to share images of them in costume, posing in a light and playful way, without lapsing into pornography.

The cost of the Olympic dream

The decision to open a channel on OnlyFans was mainly motivated by the need to cover expenses related to their sporting careers. British athletes, in fact, do not receive direct compensation for the Olympic medals they win. Laugher, who won three medals at the Olympic Games, including a gold medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and Williams, who won a world silver medal in synchronised diving, had to find alternative ways to meet their expenses.

The media impact

The news made the rounds in British tabloids such as the Daily Mail, which highlighted the choice of the two athletes. ‘I’m just here to have fun,’ Williams stated on his personal OnlyFans page, emphasising that apart from the fun, the extra earnings are still welcome. The platform allows them to supplement their income by earning through user subscriptions, which can pay around 9 euros per month or 100 euros per year to access content.
