OFcom took a peek into OnlyFans like that nosy neighbor everyone rolls their eyes at, who peeks through the curtains anytime you pull into the driveway. But in the end, they decided there was nothing of note to be concerned about. Skiddleedee, skiddleedoo, nothing to see here! … Meanwhile, Sophie Rain and her Bop House full of barely legal women are making bank. So why all the fuss?

If you read “Ofcom” and wondered to yourself why OnlyFans.com was investigating itself, let’s help clear up that misconception. Ofcom is an abbreviation for the Office of Communications in the United Kingdom. Basically, all things broadcasting—including adults-only content—fall under their jurisdiction. OFcom was concerned about possibly high numbers of underage content creators sneaking into OnlyFans, and launched an investigation to determine whether or not the age verification process was tight enough. OnlyFans essentially said, “Dude, chill. Our age checks are set to 18+,” and OFcom said, “Good enough, case closed.”

And yet. We have Sophie Rain and the Bop House. Sophie Rain is a 20-year-old content creator who made over $40 million on OnlyFans last year and used those earnings to purchase a mansion in Miami, where she lives with a group of other OnlyFans content creators, all of whom are bringing in bank. Why? Because while they are all technically of legal age—including one content creator who is freshly turned 18—they ALL look like they’re underage, and there’s a scarily large market out there for content from “barely legal” content creators. Do we have beef with these content creators taking advantage of that market? Nope. But the fact that it exists at all is icky at best and a slippery slope to exploitation at worst.

OnlyFans has something for everyone, but the large number of accounts run by someone just past the threshold of adulthood is concerning. OnlyFans may have measures in place to ensure that no one who is actively underage is creating content on the adults-only platform, but are they enough? The real concern isn’t just making sure underage access is under lock and key, but rather how well OnlyFans caters to users who want their explicit material to appear to feature underage creators. “Barely legal” is a selling point, and the wild success of 1. Sophie Rain, and 2. Her Bop House prove it. The age verification process may prove that content creators are legally able to do what they do for the platform, but the fact that the category is as popular as it is should be concerning. At least concerning enough for Ofcom to not throw in the towel so quickly on keeping a closer eye on the platform’s goings-on. OnlyFans is playing within very thin—barely legal—margins of what sells, making it far too easy for a 17-year-old or two to slip in under the radar with or without their knowledge.

So while OFcom says they’re done poking around, let’s be real. OnlyFans is going to have to keep a very close eye on those “barely legal” accounts in order to make sure that everything truly is above board and that no one is being exploited without their consent. Sophie Rain and the Bop House? They’re just playing the game, and as long as “barely legal” sells, there will be very young adults ready to cash in.
