A new class action lawsuit has put OnlyFans under intense scrutiny, alleging that the platform knowingly allows third-party “chatters” to impersonate models and extract large sums of money from unsuspecting users. The lawsuit, filed by the legal firm Hagens Berman in July 2024, claims that men were misled into believing they were forming genuine relationships with OnlyFans models, only to later discover they had been interacting with outsourced chat operators.

According to The Independent UK, the lawsuit details how agencies such as Convo Bunny and Ghost Chatters employ individuals—often from countries like Venezuela, the Philippines, and Romania—to manage OnlyFans chats on behalf of models. These chatters are trained to maximize earnings by emotionally engaging customers, pushing custom content sales, and even manipulating them into believing they were in romantic relationships. Some men reportedly spent tens of thousands of dollars under these false pretenses.

The controversy gained traction when several OnlyFans users noticed inconsistencies in their interactions with models. Some, like a user named Tom, became suspicious after meeting a model in person, only to receive conflicting responses from her online persona later. Others, like IT worker James, uncovered discrepancies through digital forensics, identifying chat scripts, pre-recorded media, and even metadata proving that some models were located in different countries than they claimed.

The lawsuit accuses OnlyFans of deceptive business practices, arguing that the company benefits financially from these chatters while failing to disclose their existence. Plaintiffs claim not only financial damages but also emotional distress, as some had shared private and intimate content under the assumption they were conversing with a real person.

OnlyFans has not publicly commented on the lawsuit, despite multiple requests from many media outlets. Meanwhile, legal experts suggest that the case could set a significant precedent for transparency and accountability in the online adult entertainment industry.
