Skipping lightly over the fact that it’s title feels like it was designed to give search engines a conniption (“Ah,” we think to ourselves, “time to enjoy some Adults television”), the trailer for FX’s new “twenty-somethings making a hopeful mess of their lives” comedy Adults does actually seem to have some pretty good gags in it. Created by former Tonight Show writers Ben Kronengold & Rebecca Shaw (along with former Adult Beginner Nick Kroll), the show centers on five friends (Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, and Owen Thiele) sharing a house and several personal crises together in New York, a process that appears to involve some puking, dashed OnlyFans aspirations, and, delightfully, a train whistle.

It’s always a little tricky, when tuning in to a show like this, to figure out how emotionally realistic the whole thing is supposed to be: Press materials for the series call it “a slightly heightened twist on the wins, losses and humiliations of starting out in the adult world,” so we’re guessing we’re supposed to view the quartet as existing at at least some extremes of acceptable human behavior. (Somewhere in the Broad City range, maybe, deploying a reference that its characters would presumably peg us as ancient for making.) Still, it’s all pretty charming, and the presence of a series of FX comedy superstars—Baskets‘ Jonathan Krisel, What We Do In The Shadows’ Sarah Naftalis, Atlanta‘s Stefani Robinson—on its production team help paper over any potential worries, at least until we can take in the show in full.

Speaking of: Adults’ eight-episode first season kicks off on FX on May 28.
