Jay Park recently made headlines by suddenly opening an OnlyFans account ahead of the release of his next single, “McNasty.” The star’s unexpected move also sparked a heated online debate.
While OnlyFans has now become a popular platform for Western celebrities, the same cannot be said about those living in South Korea. Which is why many people were surprised by Jay Park’s announcement.
However, the account has been “well” received, with fans mostly making jokes and memes out of his OnlyFans pictures. Despite this, a more serious debate emerged when one X (formerly known as Twitter) user pointed out the industry’s double standards. How would everyone react if it was a female idol that opened an OnlyFans account?
In the tweet — which has since gone viral with over 5.5 million views and more than 145,000 likes — the fan suggests that a female idol would likely face career-ending backlash, blacklisting, and harassment.
everyone joking around abt this but if a female idol did the same? career over, blacklisted instantly and harassed for the rest of her life https://t.co/o1VfwJQJNK

Responses to this tweet have been varied, with some netizens emphasizing that Jay Park is no longer an idol and has already faced industry blacklisting since his departure from 2PM. Others noted that his current status as an independent artist might shield him from the harsher criticism a female idol might face.

The debate also touched on the perception of male versus female celebrities in South Korea’s entertainment industry. Some commenters argue that the relatively accepting reaction to Jay Park’s OnlyFans account is partly because he is not currently active as a traditional K-Pop idol.
He’s not a kpop idol and he’s already been blacklisted from the kpop industry. He’s like the male equivalent of Jessi and nobody would gaf if she did this. https://t.co/pOkOEd1VbN

he’s not an idol let’s start there, he has no obligations to adhere to any contract or agreement. He is the contract, he is the agreement, he’s the CEO damn it. Idols can’t relate https://t.co/8VUGAZGjF3

This then led to another question being asked: How would a male K-Pop idol’s OnlyFans account be received? Would the public’s reaction be different from Jay Park’s? Or would it be the same?
