Watching porn occasionally is considered acceptable by many within relationships, but a new study has revealed that a majority of women in Australia believe subscribing to OnlyFans amounted to cheating. Around 56 percent of women believe subscribing to an OnlyFans account constitutes cheating, compared to 38 percent of men.

The survey, conducted ahead of news.com.au’s Great Aussie Debate, also revealed that 48 percent of men consider that it depends on the type of interactions involved, while only 36 percent of women share this sentiment. There are just 9 percent of women and 15 percent of men who feel that interacting with OnlyFans stars or consuming their content is “normal.”

Shedding light on the growing influence of OnlyFans, the survey sampled 1,870 Australians, alongside street interviews. The statistics gave an insight into the impact of the platform and the acceptability of pornography consumption within modern relationships. When news.com.au hit the streets, Aussies showed a sharp divide on what constitutes cheating when it comes to adult content consumption.

In one of the interviews, a woman said that it was cheating, but it depended on what sort of explicit content her partner was watching. Her friend agreed, adding that how much money was spent also played a significant role. “If you’re paying for something, interacting, and have a particular person of interest, that’s definitely cheating,” she said.

Two men, on the other hand, were asked, “Is subscribing to OnlyFans cheating?” One said they didn’t think it was akin to having an affair but still described it as a “dog act” as it crossed a line in a relationship. “If I was with someone for, say, five years, I’d be like, ‘What’s going on here?’ That would be a big fight. Whereas with someone new? Bye,” he said.

Another man, sporting a fedora, firmly rejected the idea of women looking at naked men online. “I wouldn’t even date her in the first place. I’d break up with them on the spot.”

Another interviewee, an Irish expat, expressed his thought that it was a “waste of money,” asking, “If you have a partner, why do you need OnlyFans?”

Considering the cost-of-living crisis, the financial aspect also plays a part in people’s concerns, as subscriptions to OnlyFans accounts cost between $5 (around Rs 430) and $10 (Rs 860) a month, with additional private messages from creators costing between $3 and $200 (Rs 260-Rs 17,300) per message.

The survey also found that couples living together are less concerned about the X-rated platform than those who live apart. Among those, around 41 percent of married couples felt it depended on the type of interaction, while 55 percent of people who do not live together believed it was cheating.

Meanwhile, studies have shown that couples who watch pornography together report higher sexual and relationship satisfaction. Experts, however, warn that porn consumption often harms relationships, particularly when it’s used by one partner secretly.

This finding highlights a stark difference in how men and women perceive the boundaries of fidelity in the digital age.
