When Romanian-Canadian Olympic speed skater Alexandra Ianculescu stepped off the ice for the last time, she had a decision to make. How was the athlete going to earn a living now that she was done with her time in the frosted arena? While trying to sort out what it was she wanted to do in order to bankroll her transition into cycling, she posted pictures of herself in a bikini to her social media channels and more than one person admitted that they’d happily pay money to see her swimsuit pics on the regular.

And thus, a lucrative OnlyFans career was born.

Ianculescu was initially hesitant to join the platform, as many models receive widespread judgment and scrutiny due to their presence on the platform. Even content creators who don’t engage in posting explicit content still face harassment from the general public due to the perception that OnlyFans is “just homemade porn”. While, yes, you can find pornographic content on OnlyFans, there is a lot more to the platform than that. By all means, if you wish to post NSFW content, by all means; go forth and do so! OnlyFans doesn’t mind, as long as all parties involved are consenting adults.

Many women show up on OnlyFans without showing off their everything, and that’s the beauty of the platform. Women all over the world are showing up and joining OnlyFans as content creators sharing everything from bikini pictures, to breakdowns of their favorite pasta recipes. The magic is in the sense of control that OnlyFans gives the content creators that drive its revenue— creatively, and financially.

Countless women have found financial empowerment through their ability to earn… not small sums of money annually on OnlyFans. Where before they were dependent on guardians, a partner, or an employment system that mandated what they could and could not do while “on the clock”, OnlyFans gives them the ability to earn as much money as they want through paid subscriptions, and the private videos that extra enthusiastic followers cough up even more money to enjoy.

Ianculescu is another woman who has discovered that the financial freedom that comes with OnlyFans is more than worth the judgment. The aspiring cyclist is hopeful that she’ll be able to compete in L.A. in 2028, and the way she’s paying for her training, supplies, and lifestyle while she prepares for the Olympic trials?

OnlyFans.

For women who come from a background that isn’t exactly lucrative— speed skating is a very niche sport— having the ability to not only make a living, but be able to plan for the future by setting money aside… that’s incredibly important.

As far as dealing with the judgment? Ianculescu has said that she learned at a young age that she was going to be judged one way or another no matter what she did. Women an be fat or thin and people won’t be satisfied with their shape, loud or soft and people won’t be satisfied with their volume, clothed from chin to toe or clad in a bikini and someone will have a negative opinion about the way they’ve chosen to present themselves. Basically, the former speed skater turned training cyclist decided that she was going to do whatever was best for her, and the rest of the world could stick it.

Women like Alexandra Ianculescu are taking the narrative that comes with sex work, that these women are desperate, evil, depraved, sex fiends, etc; and they’re turning it on its head. Because they’re right! Women are going to be judged no matter what they do, and they might as well use that judgment to pay the bills.

Alexandra Ianculescu, we hope you continue to thrive both on and off screen. Best of luck as you continue to train, and continue to blaze a trail for women like you who are ready to seize control of their earning power.
