Canadian athlete Alysha Newman has now excited Olympic fans both on and off the field after winning bronze in a dramatic women’s pole vault final. Newman recorded a new national record at the Stade de France, clearing 4.85metres to secure her first ever medal at a Summer Games.
It made her the first female from her country to ever win an Olympic pole vault medal, and the first Canadian since William Halpenny in 1912.
And the 30-year-old duly celebrated by ’twerking’ to the crowd, prompting huge cheers of approval.
Newman cleared the same height as American Katie Moon, but her rival was awarded silver for clearing the bar on her second attempt, one fewer than the Ontario-born star. Australia’s Nina Kennedy took gold by clearing 4.90m.
Her display was as impressive as it was surprising, having not competed in a major final since 2019. An ankle injury also scuppered her participation in the 2024 World Indoor Championships, putting her Olympic campaign into doubt.
But afterwards, she insisted she had remained positive over her medal prospects. “I never gave up on myself this year,” she said. “And when things went bad, I still smiled. And that’s huge.”
Prior to arriving in Paris, Newman was already a global star, and not simply because of her gold medal win at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She’s become renowned for her profile on the adult content platform OnlyFans.
Newman has her own account, and reportedly charges £10-a-month. And after confirming her decision to supplement her income two years ago, she pushed back at suggestions her new venture would adversely affect her athletics.
“I want a family, I want a nice home, I want a medal,” she said. “I want to live a certain lifestyle. Why can’t I have it all? I know what I want. Don’t get in my way. Otherwise, I’m moving you out of my way.”
Newman has also previously attended New York Fashion Week. And her Instagram following has now exceeded 609,000, with the posts a combination of her competing and modelling.
And she’s far from the only athlete in Paris to utilise OnlyFans. New Zealand rower Robbie Manson told Reuters: “I get more than double what I would be on otherwise as an athlete. Read into that what you will, but I am making more from OnlyFans than I am from rowing at this stage.”
