Curry Barker has one of the biggest movies of the year, and he still put his newest film on YouTube for free. According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lexi Carson, the Obsession filmmaker released Mama Bear, a five-minute horror short, on Thursday, October 29, just in time for Halloween.

Back on the channel that started it

Barker wrote, directed and edited the short, and it premiered on That’s a Bad Idea, the sketch comedy YouTube channel he co-runs with creative partner Cooper Tomlinson. The Hollywood Reporter says the project was sponsored by Windows and stars Jon Lee Richardson as Floyd, a young man whose nap is cut short by disturbing phone calls, only for him to discover he isn’t the only version of himself.

The turnaround was fast. Costume designer Blair James, who also worked on Obsession, told the outlet, “We shot this three and a half weeks ago; it was a really quick turnaround.”

From YouTube shorts to a box office giant

As Variety‘s Payton Turkeltaub reports, Barker rose to prominence acting and directing in YouTube videos before Obsession. The film went on to gross $519 million worldwide on a budget of less than $1 million, and Barker has since signed an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse.

His slate keeps growing. IndieWire notes that his lineup includes a Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot for A24, while Anything But Ghosts, a horror-comedy he directed and co-wrote with Tomlinson, is set for theaters on May 7, 2027.

Why creators should pay attention

According to Tubefilter‘s Sam Gutelle, creators have become hot commodities in Hollywood this year, especially in horror, with Barker’s Obsession and Kane Parsons’ Backrooms among the summer’s biggest sleeper hits. Gutelle argues that Barker’s choice to premiere Mama Bear on YouTube shows how creators think differently from the directors who came before them, keeping their independence while giving fans what they want.

The takeaway

Barker’s move is a lesson for any creator who lands a big break: the audience that got you there is still worth showing up for. A studio deal can open doors, but the channel you built yourself is the one place where you control the release, the timing and the relationship with your fans.
