The world’s biggest advertising festival is making room for creators at the top table. According to Net Influencer‘s Dragomir Stojkov, Cannes Lions has announced a four-part overhaul for its 2027 festival, and one piece of it is a new annual honor whose categories explicitly include the creator economy.

A new honor with a creator category

The honor is called the Global Creative Assembly. In its official announcement, organizer LIONS describes it as recognition for pioneering people whose creativity has transformed their own fields and influenced the world beyond them. The founding Laureates will come from advertising, marketing, film, music, sport, fashion, design, technology, entertainment and the creator economy, and each will receive a Laureate Lion at one of the 2027 awards ceremonies.

The Assembly will also come with keynotes, performances and behind-the-scenes sessions on how the honorees think and work. LIONS hasn’t named anyone yet and says the full Assembly will be announced over the coming months.

Why creators are in the mix

Net Influencer points out that the creator category follows a restructuring LIONS announced in September, when it said VidCon would join its portfolio starting in 2027 under a new format called “VidCon x LIONS Creators.” At the time, LIONS said the move reflected “the increasingly central role the Creator Economy plays in how brands, audiences, and culture connect.”

The outlet adds that more than 250 creators attended Cannes Lions 2026, and that the LIONS Creators track, produced with Adobe, was folded into the main festival footprint at the Palais Beach instead of running as a separate event.

The rest of the overhaul

According to LBB Online, award-winning and shortlisted work will be shown through installations, screenings and experiences across the city, from the Croisette and the beaches to participating venues, instead of staying inside the Palais. The delegate pass will also start turning into a city-wide festival “passport” that reaches select stages and events outside the main venue.

TSNN reports that LIONS is raising funding for its Equity, Representation and Accessibility passes from €2 million to €3 million, a 50% increase as the program enters its fourth year. Net Influencer quotes CEO Simon Cook saying the goal is to “give the world’s best ideas the visibility they deserve, open the Festival to more of the world, and to connect the people and businesses who can turn creative excellence into commercial and cultural value.”

The takeaway

Putting the creator economy next to film, music and sport in a lifetime-style honor is a status signal. Creators have been showing up at Cannes for years to make deals; starting in 2027, at least one of them could walk away with a Lion for the career itself. Who LIONS picks will say a lot about which kinds of creators the ad industry is ready to celebrate in public.
